美國圖書館週

2010年4月11至17日是美國的國家圖書館週(National Library Week 2010)，今年主題為：「(在)你的圖書館讓社區成長茁壯」("Communities thrive @ your library" )。[註]

美國圖書館學會(ALA)的國家圖書館週(NLW)網頁一如往年提供圖書館許多規劃相關活動的參考資料，另外也有幾件令人印象深刻的行動：

1. OCLC編撰的單張資料：「2010年：圖書館多麼突出」(How libraries stack up: 2010) (PDF)
(編輯說明中提到) 在此圖書館預算緊縮但使用率上升的環境下，我們更注意到：圖書館在幫助求職者及支援小企業上，所扮演的角色。

這份宣傳資料配以有趣的圖示列舉說明：
每天有30萬人從公共圖書館得到求職方面的幫助；
大部分公共圖書館提供免費無線上網(約有12000個圖書館提供免費Wi-Fi上網，比提供相同服務的11000個Starbucks咖啡館還多)；
對小企業提供幫助方面，每月有280萬次；
公共圖書館每天資料的借閱流通量與FedEx快遞公司每天全球的送貨(包裹)量相等 ……

2. 美國眾議院可望通過一決議案支持圖書館週的目標及理想(Supporting the goals and ideals of National Library Week)，參見報導及議案全文。(補充House of Representatives passes resolution honoring National Library Week)

3. Stephen Albram 針對圖書館價值 (The Value of Public/School/… libraries)分享了他匯集的文章清單(Summary: My Postings on the Value of Libraries)，也值參考。


感想：
美國在擁護、聲援圖書館的作法及行動上不僅相當有組織，且很積極、有創意、能抓住著力點(重點)，不只爭取一般大眾，還有立法單位、決策者的支持，且用實際的數據及研究報告作憑證。雖美國仍不斷有圖書館因經費問題面臨關閉，但美國圖書館界並未因此坐困愁城，而是不斷努力提昇本身的社會價值、增加社會能見度，及爭取大眾支持，讓人感覺他們是靈活有力的。
